Legal

Journey Project

The Journey Project was created to strengthen justice supports for victims of sexual violence in Newfoundland & Labrador. It is a joint initiative of Public Legal Information Association of NL and the NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre.

Who is eligible?

• People of any gender aged 16 and above who have experienced sexual violence
• People currently living in Newfoundland & Labrador or who experienced sexual violence in  Newfoundland and Labrador
• People exploring their legal options or those who have already started a legal process

What is offered?

• Access to services of Legal Support Navigators who can provide legal information and supportive referrals to both legal and non-legal resources
• Up to 4 hours of free legal advice from a lawyer

Financial

The provincial Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour provides support to victims of violence in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour provides support for victims of violence in the form of:

• Transportation to a shelter or other safe place
• Accommodations
• Personal allowance for the period of time spent in a shelter (based on your financial circumstances). This is delivered by the Department of Health and Community Services.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour provides support for victims of violence who are in receipt of Income Support in the form of:

• Continuation of income support based on circumstances
• Transportation may be provided for the following reasons
– to move from one shelter to another, to move household furniture
– to obtain supportive counselling
– to move outside the province for safety reasons
• Start-up allowance to obtain furniture, clothing, etc. if it is deemed unsafe to return home to gather these items
• Services of the regional liaison social worker
